FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

WIN NUMBER 10 SLOW IN COMING FOR BROWN

Despite a torrid pace through the 20-car starting field it looked as though Mitch Brown had come one car short of registering his tenth feature win of the season at Ohsweken Speedway on August 21st.

The youngster who started 12th but was late breaking out of the tightly bunched pack of Mini Stocks set for battle in the their feature event of the evening and he appeared to be set for a tenth to seventh place finish in the 15-lap dash. But a caution flag late in the race bunched the field and it was all he needed to set himself up for a late race charge that fell a lap short in his bid to the victory.  It appeared to be only the third time that the teenager hadn't taken the winner's trophy in the 2009 season

But wait a minute. A feature race isn't over official over until post-race inspection.

The ESSO Mini Stock feature began with Chase Hess and Mike Giberson on the front row, and it was Hess getting the early lead, which he would hold for much of the first half of the race. While a good battle ensued up front between Hess and Mike Evers, fans were also keeping an eye on Brown, who was gunning for his tenth feature win of the season after finishing second to Ohsweken's Steve Hess the previous Friday.

Brown would eventually make his way to the front, but not before Kevin Hilborn and Steve Hess got their first. Hilborn made a daring three wide move to take the lead for good and cross the line first, but his car did not pass post-race tech inspection, handing the win to runner-up finisher Brown. Chase Hess was credited with second, while Steve Hess got third, followed by Abel Castelein, and Mike Evers

BROWN MISSES OUT ON TENTH FEATURE WIN OF THE SEASON

August 14, 2009

Mitch Brown's bid for his 10th feature win of the season was put on hold by Ohsweken's Steve Hess on Friday night but he did increase his point's lead atop the  standings with a solid second place run in the 15-lap race to the checkered flag.

Ethan Martin and Dave Goodacre started the fifteen-lap ESSO Mini Stock feature on the front row, but it wasn't long before Brown was up front and bidding for the win.

After an early restart, Brown made it three wide to take the lead, but Steve Hess was also hungry for a win and kept pace with Brown as the two pulled away from the rest of the field. Hess challenged Brown on the bottom a few times before making the pass in turn one just before the halfway mark. Hess would hold on from there for the feature win, while Brown settled for second, followed by Kevin Hilborn, Abel Castelein, and Rob Goulding. The win was Hess' first points-paying feature victory of the season and second feature win overall. The Ohsweken resident previously scored a win on Wednesday, July 29 during a non-points event supporting the World of Outlaws "Six Nations Showdown".

Heat races for the seventeen ESSO Mini Stocks on hand were claimed by Paul Goodale and Steve Hess.

TWO STRONG RUNS FOR BROWN AT FLAMBORO

Youngster Proves Size Not a Factor in His Racing World

Fresh off his eighth feature win of the season in Mini Stock racing at Ohsweken Speedway, Mitch Brown changed gears, changed cars and changed series to compete in the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup series at Flamboro Speedway on Sunday afternoon and proved that the size of the car, the size and texture of the racing surface and the size of experience of the competitors he faced are really not factors in his racing world.

In Sunday's qualifying, the sixteen year-old third generation driver turned the seventh fastest time trial of the 21 drivers on hand to contest the twin 50-lap events.

With the top-ten qualifiers inverted for the start of the first 50-lap segment he lined up on the outside of the second row and held his own for the first three laps around the 1/3rd-mile oval.

He charged into second place behind Windsor's Bob Merrifield when Matt Robblee spun on lap 4 but the real force in this event was Steve Robblee who was wasting little time in charging forward from his tenth starting spot.  By lap five Robblee passed the early leaders and was well on his way to victory.

Brown meanwhile, was having a tough time getting around Merrifield as the two raced nose to tail and side by side lap after lap until Mitch fought his way past the veteran campaigner. As the laps wound down to the finish Mitch was able to keep pace with the leader and appeared to have a lock on second place.  But with a late race caution, the field lined up two abreast leaving Brown in a prone outside row position and on the restart fell prey to Merrifield and Dave Connelly with just three laps remaining.

Credited with a solid fourth place finish, the Brantford rookie started the second 50-lap segment seventh and fought valiantly to catch the early leaders. Once again he had to contend with Merrifield who on this day was evenly matched with Brown in speed and the handling of their race cars.

By lap 23 Dan Prudhomme had passed early leader Josh Wood with Matt and Steve Robblee closing the gap on the duo followed by Brennan Didero, Brown and Merrifield.

A two car spin on lap 42 brought Steve Robblee into contention by separating the leaders briefly and when Matt Robblee bobbled Mitch moved to fourth But just like the fortunes he gained by the lap 42 spin, a caution on lap 47 took that fortune away on the ensuing restart when he got shuffled to seventh spot due, in some measure, to oil that was deposited on the racing surface by an undetected car.

Prudhomme outpaced Wood for the win with Dave Connelly, Cole Weber, Shawn McGlynn, Merrifield and Steve Robblee, who had a late race spin finishing ahead of Brown.

Despite the eighth-place run in the final segment, the "Rookie" remained upbeat knowing he had turned in two pretty good performances on this Sunday afternoon

CLOSE CALL FOR BROWN AT OHSWEKEN

Brown and Hess Wage Wild Battle In Mini Stock Feature

The agony of defeat was oh so close for Mitch Brown at Ohsweken Speedway of Friday night but the Brantford teenager rebounded from a late race pass by Ohsweken's Steve Hess to claim his eighth Esso Mini Stock feature win of the season.

The driver of the Brown Auto Service/ Strodes Express/WIX Filters/Leitch Performance Engines Mustang started eighth in the 19-car field and surged into second place by lap five sandwiched between early leader Ethan Martin and Hess. The next lap he edged into the lead in what appeared to be an easy march to the winner's circle.

But on this night, Hess wasn't about to settle for second place and caught Brown with a surge of power coming off turn two on lap 12 of the 15-lap race chase then opened a four car-length lead that looked safe with only two and a half laps remaining.

Surprised by Hess' move, Brown responded with a power display of his as the two leaders headed into the final lap. He caught the leader on the backstretch, moved to the outside line coming off turn 4 and edged past Hess by a nose at the finish line to extend his feature win streak to five at the popular dirt oval.

"Yea, he came out of nowhere to catch me by surprise," the quiet driver responded when questioned at the winner's presentation about Hess' move to take the lead. "But we got him back which is what it's all about," he grinned in recounting his night's performance.

Next week, Mitch Brown will be at Ohsweken to hopefully extend his win streak and defend his winner's title in the Art Hill Memorial -a 42 lap race for the Mini Stock Division.
